Scissor lift technology has come a long way over the past decade, batteries included. Standard wet cell batteries have evolved into absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries, capable of withstanding extreme conditions and requiring less maintenance, making them ideal for a variety of applications. Thin slices of glass mat cushion the lead plates, allowing manufacturers to fit more glass mats and lead into a single battery. The more lead in a battery, the more power it can hold and produce. Keep reading to discover the benefits of upgrading Hy-Brid Lifts Pro Series scissor lifts to AGM batteries over standard wet cell batteries.
AGM batteries were originally designed for use in military craft. The thin fiberglass mats are saturated in acid and soldered into place before being compressed between the lead plates, effectively holding the battery’s electrolyte in place. As a result, AGM batteries have a greater resistance to vibration and impact damage than flooded batteries. The tight configuration of glass mats and lead also enables AGM batteries to tolerate higher temperature fluctuations and makes them more resistant to sulfation. With such durable construction, it’s no wonder why you can get more starts per AGM battery compared to wet cell batteries.
Due to the glass mat-lead-glass mat structure and compressed design of AGM batteries, they’re able to charge up to five times faster than standard batteries. These advanced batteries also feature minimal self-discharging, meaning they can hold a full charge for extended periods of time, maintain their integrity during stretches of inactivity, and have longer lifespans than flooded batteries. This means you can spend less time charging your scissor lifts and more time working at height.
Standard wet cell batteries require regular maintenance. If water is not added to replenish lost electrolyte in the vents, the battery will corrode and die. AGM batteries, on the other hand, are completely sealed and don’t require any additional maintenance past plugging them in to charge. These batteries are so packed with ultra-thin fiberglass mats and lead that they naturally hold electrolyte in place, preventing water loss and reducing battery maintenance.
Wet cell batteries have a greater risk of spilling and exposing operators and mechanics to their hazardous internal chemicals. Since AGM batteries are sealed at the factory and don’t require additional maintenance, the chance of dangerous chemical spills is virtually eliminated. AGM batteries are essentially spill-proof, making them safer to use on clean jobsites and easier to transport without strict handling requirements.
